This book is a fascinating pictorial tour of Canvey Island in the days gone by. Over 200 photographs, drawn from the author's own collection, show dramatically how the island has changed through the years of this century, both in its appearance and in the way people have lived and worked there.
Until the much-awaited first bridge to the mainland was opened in 1931, access to the island was via some slippery stepping stones or the ferry, and so happy were the residents at its inauguration that they held street parties to celebrate. Photographs of these events are among those illustrated here. Frederick Hester was a man who had a vision for Canvey Island and aimed to transform it into a major attraction for visitors with the spectacular Winter Gardens, horse-drawn mono, and other innovative features His activities also drew on the island’s much earlier association with the Dutch, groups of
who settled here in the seventeenth century, and this is still remembered in the names of some of the older roads on Canvey.
Everyone who knows Canvey Island will enjoy this nostalgic trip into its recent past.
