One Shilling
The Football Programme Design Revolution of 1965-85 (Hardback)
by Matthew Caldwell and Alan Dein

One Shilling is the first-ever exploration of the golden era of football programme design.
At its heart, this is the story of John Elvin, the great football programme designer, who massacred the formal code of lay-outs, blew-up typefaces and used photos beyond the imaginable to revolutionise programme design.
This beautifully designed collection features:
  • Classic programme covers and layouts from more than 40 clubs
  • An in-depth portrait of legendary designer John Elvin
  • Interviews with some of the great designers of the era
  • A study of the wider visual and cultural backstory over the two decades from England’s World Cup victory in 1966
One Shilling is the visually stunning and groundbreaking collection that will give football fans of all clubs a beautiful insight into the history of football memorabilia.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Matthew Caldwell set up the Instagram account @1_shilling to share the story of forgotten football programme designs with the world. He is a co-founder of Monday Nights Design Practice, a cross-discipline design studio specialising in brand identity across multiple sectors, including sports and entertainment.
Alan Dein is an oral historian, writer, and radio broadcaster, as well as a lifelong collector of football ephemera.
