Glory, Glory, Gone:
The Story of Tottenham Hotspur's Regression, Relegation and Rebirth in the 1970s
By Samuel Rooke

Spurs went from being the 'team of the century' to relegation, from Feyenoord to Field Mill, and from winning trophies under the great Bill Nicholson to relegation under former Zambian coach Keith Burkinshaw, all in less than three years. The Spurs had a difficult time in the 1970s. Set against a dramatic backdrop of societal change, Nicholson's departure, the club's eventual relegation, and the passing of legendary players all occurred during a decade that defined British sport. A burgeoning culture of football hooliganism was both informed by and fed off of social and economic malaise. Images that defined the decade were ones of violence, both on and off the terraces. This book delves into Tottenham's role in this developing story, its own Götterdämmerung. But there was also a renaissance, similar to Wagner's Ring. As the much-maligned Burkinshaw assembled a thrilling team around the young Glenn Hoddle and the World Cup-winning duo of Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa, the sun rose once more. Tottenham had changed by the end of the decade and were ready for more victories.
