Throughout the years, as the game evolved, they created not only games but also stadiums and an entire realm of creativity. Eventually, as is common with many childhood fascinations, it diminished over time, leading to collections being tossed aside, sold, or at the very least relegated to attics and garages.
During the Covid-19 lockdowns, something remarkable occurred: individuals rekindled their childhood passion for the game. With the revival of collecting, teams were meticulously painted, and some even constructed the stadium they had dreamed of as a child. A vibrant community blossomed around the pastime.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Derek Air has been playing Subbuteo on and off for 50 years. A former schoolteacher, he has written numerous articles on German football for the fanzine Halb Vier and produced four series of the Subbuteo-inspired podcast Finger Flickin' Good. This is his second non-fiction book following Land of the Giants: My Journey Through the World of Table Football. A proud Scot, he lives in the Black Country where he delivers post for Royal Mail.
