Born in Dublin in 1946, Joe Kinnear became one of football's most colourful characters during his illustrious career. As a defender, he made his mark at Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent a decade (1965-1975) making nearly 200 appearances. During his tenure at Spurs, Kinnear demonstrated his agility as a right-back, contributing to the team's victory in multiple prestigious titles such as the FA Cup, two League Cups, and the UEFA Cup. His international career was equally impressive, earning over 26 caps for the Republic of Ireland between 1967 and 1975.
Following a brief spell with Brighton & Hove Albion, Kinnear transitioned into management. His most notable managerial achievement came during his tenure at Wimbledon FC (1992-1999), where he led the "Crazy Gang" to consistent Premier League performances, including an impressive sixth-place finish in the 1993/94 season. He later managed Newcastle United in 2008-2009 and returned as Director of Football in 2013-2014, though these periods were marked by controversy and mixed results.
Sadly, Joe Kinnear passed away in April 2024 at the age of 77. In his later years, he had been diagnosed with dementia in 2015 and spent his final years away from the public eye, surrounded by his family. His daughter later revealed that heading the ball during his playing career may have contributed to his condition.
