The Highs and Lows of Leicester City [Hardcover]
A Comprehensive History
by Robert Garner
Professor Robert Garner explores a remarkable period in Leicester City's history—a time of extreme highs and lows while shining a light on wider aspects of football culture. How did an unfashionable and relatively poor club, with a history of modest achievement and many disappointments, overcome the richest sides in the country to win the Premier League title in 2016? Why did the club fall out of the Premier League after several more successful seasons, only to return after just one season away? What was it like for a Foxes fan to experience these highs and lows? The author tackles each of these topics, but the book is far more than a study of one club. Through his experiences as a football dad, Garner examines the grassroots game and the often murky world of academies. Additionally, he examines the characteristics of football fandom, the reasons why the sport is vital to so many people, the game's historical development, and the effects on the sport of money's current starring role and financial inequality.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert Garner is Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Leicester. He has published 15 books on a variety of subjects. This is his first on football, although he is a regular contributor to the FanSided site Foxes of Leicester and is a lifelong Foxes fan. Despite being a university professor for 30 years, he admits, rather sadly, that he probably knows more about football than the subject he chose to build his career on.
